Art Supplies, Crafts, and Auctions

Art SuppliesThere are more art supplies on the market than can be counted. Usually what you’re looking for will be easy to find. A stroll through your local art supply store or a search online will generally bring up what you’re looking for. It is normally only rare items that are used for highly specialized projects that are difficult to find.

There are many art and craft supplies that are used by many people and are almost always readily available.

General arts and crafts supplies – Yarn, thread, fabric, wood, and glue are all common to households where a lot of crafting is done.
There are many others like beads and jewelry making supplies, knitting supplies and scrapbooking supplies that many people keep around and use often.

Children’s art supplies – There are a lot of crafts that are great for kids to make that require only a few supplies and have simple instructions. Supplies for these are great to have around for times when your child wants something to do. Crafts can be the savior of a rainy day. Things like Popsicle sticks, play-dough, and non-toxic paint are great to keep in a cupboard so that they’re available anytime.

College art supplies – If you are planning on taking art classes at a college or university, you should get some basic supplies. As you advance through the classes, you will need different supplies, but to begin with there are some that are just good to have. Some good pencils are always a nice thing to have around. Also some quality paintbrushes and paint are good investments. Other items like palettes, crayons, and paper should be bought if possible so that you have a wide variety of mediums to work with. If you can find these things on sale at a store, buy them there instead of on campus. Generally you will save a lot of money that way.

Painting supplies – If you are interested in doing a lot of painting, you need to figure out what kind of paint you are going to be working with. This is because every type of paint needs special brushes and paper. Watercolor brushes, for example, are made to absorb the color and then deposit it onto the paper evenly. Oil paints will not work well with these brushes. Also, even if you have a brush that will work with more than one kind of paint, only paint with one kind with it. Using one brush with a variety of paints may affect its ability to deposit some paints onto the paper properly.

Whenever you buy art supplies, you should have some ideas of where you are going to look for them, and you should try multiple stores. While one store might have a good everyday price on something, you may be able to find it even cheaper on sale at a different store. You should always keep your eyes open for sales and coupons. You will save yourself a lot of money this way.

If you don’t know exactly what you are looking for, you may want to shop at a store with knowledgeable employees the first time of two before you head off to compare prices. You don’t want to be buying the wrong items. If you choose this route, watch the employees carefully. Generally they will be very helpful, but if you get the feeling that they don’t know what they’re talking about, don’t be afraid to ask to speak with someone else. It’s your money, and you need to be confident in what you’re buying.

A great place to look for art supplies once you have an idea of what you’re looking for is at an online art auction. Internet art auctions often help artists to purchase the supplies they need at a greatly reduced price compared to art supply stores.

Another reason auctions are nice is that sometimes there is a wide variety of items that may have been difficult to find otherwise. Checking out art supply auctions can really pay off.
